Can Anything Be Done About Psoriasis?

If you find you have small patches of red, itchy skin, you may have psoriasis. Watch the area closely and if it persists, schedule an appointment with your physician.

If you find white patches in the area of the folds of the arms, the breast area or legs, even if there is now irritation present, it could possibly be psoriasis. It is possible that heredity may play a part but most commonly it is found in people aged 15 to 35. The disease is slow to begin. It can be assumed that they certain signals may be sent to the body’s white blood cells during any injury and the skin reacts by activating its defense system, with a supply of white blood cells there by making the skin red and irritable.

There are many reasons that psoriasis may be present. These include; a lack of vitamin D, drinking an excess amount of alcohol, the medications you may be taking, a viral or bacterial infection or allergies along with a variety of weather conditions. No one knows for sure what the exact trigger may be for the onset of this disease.

The disease may affect any, or even all, areas of the body. Most commonly the areas affected are the folds of the skin, around the armpits, the legs and breast areas. The five known types of psoriasis are:

Erythrodermic- This type covers a large area of the body and is usually a dark reddish color.

Guttate- consists of small pink or red spots on the skin.

Inverse- this type is shown by red patches in or near the armpits, breasts and other folds of skin.

Plaque- this one shows as red patches with silvery white scales.

Pustular- is the type that shows white blisters that are covered by red, itchy skin.

Treatment of psoriasis depends on what situation the person is facing. The physician may prescribe a biopsy along with an X-ray. They will concentrate on the root of the problem. There are times when hospitalization may be necessary, such as when a large area of the body is affected. This is purely a safety measure taken in order to prevent other problems from arising.

Most of the time an antibiotic along with a cream or ointment may be prescribed by the physician. They will also recommend certain shampoos and moisturizers that could be beneficial in stopping the spread of the disease.

The best prevention against psoriasis is to clean your skin regularly. There is ongoing research into the best solutions and medications for the treatment of psoriasis.

The best advice is to consult your physician regularly for a checkup so any issues can be caught early on. Watch any area of the body that seems to be affected by redness and irritation. This could be a sign of psoriasis.

I came across this book by a (so-called) fluke although in reality–it is a timely answer to a 32 yr-old prayer. I read the book with great enthusiasm because my current doctor had put me on an elimination diet to detoxify my liver. No sooner had he done this than my skin began to clear up. When I read this book, the author says that many people initially find relief to psoriasis when their doctors put them on elimination diets for other reasons. Thus the undisputable proof that diet and nutrition have everything to do with your health. When I finished the book, I gave it to my doctor who was extremely open to its suggestions. We immediately put 2 or 3 of the book’s suggestions to work in addition to what I was already doing. Even though we are in the middle of winter (the worst time of year for the psioratic), my skin continues to clear and is soft and supple. I have since told everyone I know who suffers with this skin disorder, about this book. Please, please–give this book a chance. Improvements are generally noticed within 6-8 weeks. You need to give your skin a chance to heal underneath and then make its way to the surface where you will eventually see it. The first thing I noticed was that it stopped spreading! Diet is rather strict while the skin is healing–then you can play around with what works for you and more importantly, what doesn’t. In the meantime, stop eating tomatoes, white potatoes, eggplant, peppers of any kind (except black pepper), vinegar and alcohol–and if you smoke, either quit or cut down to 3-4 cigarettes a day. Tobacco is a “nightshade” and exceptionally toxic to the psioratic. Increase your fruits and vegetables. No red meat (including pork). Limit all dairy products to nonfat or 1% milk fat, and even then, limit your consumption. And (obviously) limit or eliminate sugar. Cut out gluten products (pasta, breads, cakes and cereals). Take a tablespoon of flaxseed oil each morning and evening–and also two capsules of Omega 3 fish oil capsules, both morning and evening. Keep flaxseed oil in refrigerator and Omega 3 fish oil caps in freezer. These few guidelines will get you started until you can read this book. Sounds like alot, but clear skin will be worth it!

I found Dr. Pagano’s book, quite by accident, inCT, and “What A Find!” I never thought of looking for a book that would have a cure.After suffering for 36 years with psoriasis, and applying expensive ‘rub-on’ medications, as well as bear grease, bag balm and a host of other home remedies from the “older generation” here at home, I came to the realization that something had to be wrong inside, but no one (doctor) could help me because they didn’t have a clue. Every one has different experiences with psoriasis and the various “cures” available. This one works for me where others have not. After 6 months on a modified regimen primarily of milk thistle, B-50 or 100 complex, garlic oil, lecithin and Omega-3/GLA, my skin has actually cleared in most places. I don’t take all the supplements LeVan discusses. Being off the regimen for very long allows the lesions to re-form. This book was the first I have found that addresses the underlying biochemical cause of psoriasis (liver malfunction) and gives a non-steroid option for relief. At the very least I can now function in relative comfort and have worn short sleeves in public for the first time in years. Hurrah for this book!

I suffer from psoriasis and am also a nutritionist. I think the overall message of this book (ie psoriasis symptoms can be influenced to some degree by diet and lifestyle, and modifications of an unhealthy diet/lifestyle can therefore help mitigate psoriasis symptoms) is valid. However, I find it extremely unnerving to find a biochemist giving specific guidelines on nutrient intake which are not consistent with current recommended guidelines. Current guidelines are based on clinical studies and scientific research and they should not be ignored. A specific example – Levan recommends a vitamin B12 intake of 1000 mcg twice a day. The known toxic intake of this vitamin is 100 mcg/day (ie Levan is recommending an intake 20x the toxic level). This vitamin is stored in the liver and so toxicity is a real risk. Scary stuff. My recommendation to other psoriasis sufferers would be to believe in Levan’s premise – a healthy diet and lifestyle will help alleviate psoriasis symptoms, then avail yourself of a book written by a well grounded nutritionist (Miriam Nelson for example) or consult a dietitian. At the very least, read Levan’s book with an open mind, check her numbers vs other texts and use her guidelines with caution.

I have used countless products to treat my psoriasis; MG217, prescription creams, soaps, etc… Of them all, my favorite, and, honestly, the only truly effective one has been Oxipor. It’s a liquid that you can apply with a cotton swab, which dries quickly. It does leave a slight coloration and smell until you wash it off, but applied before bed it is only minimally inconvenient. In my experience with psoriasis, good coal tar products have completely cleared my problem areas. Recently, I cleared a bad flare-up that persisted against treatment with Dovenex cream and even a clobetasol spray that previously worked. Neutrogena coal tar shampoo has kept away scalp problems for more than 10 years, so I decided to use it as a body soap, then apply the Oxipor product after drying off. Within a week, the newer plaques disappeared completely. Within two weeks, the old, thick plaques cleared entirely, and were left only darkly discolored. Coal tar products are very effective for me, but my doctor prefers to prescribe the newer pharmaceuticals, regardless of their actual benefit. Psoriasis has affected the human beings for very long time; though earlier it was believed to be a type of leprosy.

An exact cause for Psoriasis is not known. It is believed that Psoriasis affects the body because of malfunctioning of the immune-system. Several factors can lead to Psoriasis like stress, depression, consumption of alcohol amongst others. Psoriasis is recurring and chronic in nature. This poses great difficultly in invention of a better treatment for Psoriasis.

Psoriasis has various types which include Plaque Psoriasis, Guttate Psoriasis, Nail Psoriasis Erythrodermic Psoriasis and Flexural Psoriasis. But, most common and most frequently affecting psoriasis is Plaque Psoriasis. This affects about 85% people suffering from psoriasis. What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes scaling and inflammation and is believed to be a disorder of the immune system. This non-contagious skin disorder is extremely uncomfortable and highly unattractive, causing the individual possible embarrassment. Psoriasis affects about 2 to 2.6 percent of the population and doesn’t seem to discriminate against age, race or gender.

What causes psoriasis?

Though we aren’t positive of the exact cause, research has shown that psoriasis is most likely to be an overabundance of T cells. T cells are a type of white blood cell that helps protect the body against infection or disease. The T cells cause the inflammation and excessive skin cell reproduction, which leads to skin inflammation and flaking.

Symptoms

This is a rather complex subject. Though in all forms of psoriasis, there is a rash present, different types of psoriasis exhibit a different type of rash.

- Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis, which displays red-based legions that are covered by silvery scales.

- Guttate psoriasis appears on the trunk of the body, arms, legs and scalp and produces drop-like legions. Viral respiratory infections or certain bacterial infections may initiate this type of psoriasis.

- Pustular psoriasis displays itself as blisters filled with puss. Medications, sunlight, infections, pregnancy, perspiration, stress or exposure to certain chemicals may trigger pustular psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious condition which appears as thick red, patches of plaques or inflamed skin lesions. These skin lesions have silver white scabs of dead skin appearing on the arms, feet , back of the legs, elbows, scalp, fold of the buttocks, and nails. According to the National Institute of Health, “as many as 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis.” It affects more women than men and is most common in fair skin individuals and is rare in dark skin individuals.

The National Psoriasis Foundation reports that, “30% of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis is also associated with other serious conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases and obesity.

What Causes Psoriasis?

The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown and there is no cure. Researchers do agree that psoriasis is related to faulty signals sent by the body’s immune system. The faulty signals accelerate the growth cycle in skin cells causing a skin maturity and replacement problem. Normal skin shedding takes 28 – 30 days. In psoriasis skin shedding takes less than a week to mature. This early maturity and skin shedding causes the skin cells to raise and pile up on the skin surface resulting in psoriasis.
